Food webs model interactions within the community.
HOW DOES ENERGY FLOW THROUGH AN ECOSYSTEM?  An ecosystem consists of all the organisms living and in an area as well as the nonliving parts of that environment.
Food Chains, Webs & Pyramids! 1) The Passage of Energy The Sun The source of energy for all life on the planet Producers (Autotroph) Use the sun’s energy.
Objective: Energy Pyramid Essential Question: How does energy flow on a food pyramid? Words to Know: Trophic level Primary producer Primary consumer Secondary.
Energy in Ecology How is energy transferred?. Energy  All ecosystems must transfer energy.  Energy flows in ONE DIRECTION  Heat Energy (Sun)  changes.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

Spinning the Web of Life Content Objective: Students will create a Food Web from their own daily food consumption Language Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of Food Webs by drawing a food web with their group

Spinning the Web of Life In your Journal, create your groups ideal menu for 1 day. Include snacks as well as meals.

Spinning the Web of Life Make a 3 column chart in your journal. List the foods from your groups ideal menu in the 1st column List the ingredients in each menu item in the 2nd column. Example: A piece of cake would list oil, flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk.

Spinning the Web of Life In the 3rd column of your chart list the sources for the ingredients of each menu item Example: Write wheat next to flour, sugar cane or sugar beet next to sugar, and chicken next to egg.

Spinning the Web of Life Create another 3 column chart In the 2nd column (center), list all of the animals that appeared in your 1st chart. For every animal that you have listed list several food that it eats in the 3rd column Example: Next to cow you would list the grass and corn that cattle eat

Spinning the Web of Life In the 1st column, next to the animals in column 2, record 2 animals that might eat each animal. Example: Next to cow you might list wolf, bear, mountain lion or human

Spinning the Web of Life On the White Board create 5 equal sized sections List all the names of the plant in the bottom section Write the names of all the herbivores (plant eaters) in the next section above the plants Write all the names of the Omnivores in the section above the herbivores Write all of the names of the Carnivores in the Top section

Spinning the Web of Life Draw arrows from the organisms that provide energy to the organisms that receive energy. Example: You would draw an arrow from grass to cattle with point of the arrow aimed at the cattle. Draw your groups food web into your journal

Spinning the Web of Life Read the following articles in your textbook. Let’s Ask Drs. Ricardo and Rita. Pgs 383-388 Losing Heat Pages 388-389

Spinning the Web of Life Use the reading to discuss with your group the following questions. Record your answers in your Journal: What is then key difference between the way producers and consumers obtain energy and matter from their ecosystem. Why is there no predator in Africa that lives by eating only Lions and Leopards? What effect are cattle and other domesticated livestock having on certain ecosystems?

Spinning the Web of Life Analysis Questions Describe how Energy flows through the Community, as shown in your food web(Use the 10% rule in your discussion) Where is the most Energy available in your food web?. Explain your answer.
