Vocabulary Chapter 5: Lesson 1 Solar energy Hydroelectric Power Biomass fuel Gasohol Geothermal energy Nuclear fission Reactor vessel Fuel rod Control rod

Solar Energy Energy from the sun

Hydroelectric Power Electricity produced by flowing water

Biomass Fuels Fuels that are made from living organisms Ex. Leaves, food wastes, manure, trees

gasohol A fuel for cars that is made by adding alcohol to gas

Geothermal The intense heat from Earth’s interior that warms magma

Nuclear Fission The splitting of an atom’s nucleus into two nuclei which releases a lot of energy

Reactor Vessel The part of the nuclear reactor where nuclear fission occurs

Fuel Rods The rods made of radioactive uranium that are in reactors which trigger a series of fission reactions

Control Rods Rods used to slow down the fission reactions if the vessel gets too hot
