Definition of Process Analysis “Process Analysis explains a sequence of actions with a specified result (the process) by dividing it into its component steps (the analysis)” Process Analysis explains how to do or make something, or how something happens. Examples of Process Analyses: Game rules, repair manuals, cookbooks.

Reading Process Analysis Chronological sequence May need to pause in order to provide definitions or specialized terms Fully detail each step and specify the reasons for it Two types of process analysis Directive- Tells how to do or make something by outlining the process in steps in order to achieve a specific result (address reader directly- 2nd person and imperative verbs) Explanatory- Provides the information for readers to understand the process; not necessarily to teach them how to perform it (3rd person)

Analyzing Process Analysis A directive process analysis tells “how to…” Process divided into three distinct steps: Performance of the step Reason for the step Result of the process Transitions are used to signal sequence, time, and place: First, Then, In ten days, etc.

Developing a Process Analysis Essay Getting Started List in chronological order Remember readers views Explain why step is necessary Give background information Forming a Thesis Decide point of analysis Increase reader’s interest by conveying reason to write it Organizing Begin with overview of process to which readers can relate each step Introduction can be used for background information Ends with result Drafting Straightforward, concise writing style

Revising and Editing Have you adhered to chronological sequence? Have you included all necessary steps and omitted any unnecessary digressions?
