Environmental Science book – Pg. 11 Bell work (5 minutes) What do you think the “tragedy of the commons” is about before reading the story? Environmental Science book – Pg. 11 Check your calendar and write in your planner Cover page and 2 pages of your book are due Friday

understand the negative affects of unregulated resources. Learning target I can identify several global commons and decide if they are being used properly. Today I am… working with my group to see what happens when a fishing lake is unregulated. So that I’ll be able to… understand the negative affects of unregulated resources. I’ll know I’ve got it when… my group can answer all reflection questions and describe why environmental regulations are needed.

Before we start – M&M’s warm up Rules: No talking; you may not consult with other people. “Claim” any number of M&Ms in the bag by writing the number and your name on the scrap paper. I will collect all the claims and IF the total claimed does not exceed the total number of M&Ms in the bag. Prizes will be awarded: 20 pts extra credit for the largest claim 15 pts extra credit for the 2nd largest claim 10 pts extra credit for the 3rd largest claim

M&M’s warm up While I add up the number of claims, on your whiteboard write your answers to these questions. We will discuss these in a minute. 1. What did you think about when making your decision? 2. Did you use a cost-benefit analysis? Why or why not?

Addressing an important question… What will happen if we use resources globally at an unsustainable rate? Think about this question as you are completing the activity.

Answer questions 1-3 on your worksheet and then stop!

1st game - Unregulated Rules of the game Each person must roll the dice Must document each person’s roll on the chart Each year the remaining fish in the pond reproduce (each fish has a baby) Continue until you run out of fish or reach year 5, whichever comes first.

Why do I care? On your whiteboard tell me how this concept impacts your life. I will be checking your whiteboard so do not erase it.
