Investigating Cell Transport Gummy Bear Lab Investigating Cell Transport

What will we do? Be testing a gummy bear over a period of 3 days to see how water moves into and out of the gummy bear Need to copy the purpore and the problem from the board into your science notebook

Procedures Day 1: 1. Get: 2 Dixie cups 2 different colors gummy bears A Ruler 2. Label one cup “TAP” and one cup “DISTILLED” 3. Measure length, width and height of each bear 4. Find the mass of each bear 5. Place the bears in a cup 6. Cover one with distilled and one with tap water (Cup about ¼ of way filled)

Procedure Day 2: Get both cups from yesterday – carefully pour excess water in sink and put gummy bear on paper towel (CAREFUL BEARS MAY FALL APART) Measure new length, width and height of both bears and place them back in cup Record in data table Get salt solution and fill cup to cover gummy bear then place back on cart

Day Two Lab Questions Find the percent change in volume of each bear (formula on board) What happened to the bears when placed in distilled water? WHY? What happened to the bears when placed in tap water? WHY?

Procedure Day 3 Get both cups from yesterday – carefully pour excess water in sink and put gummy bear on paper towel (CAREFUL BEARS MAY FALL APART) Measure new length, width and height of both bears and throw materials away Record in data table

Day Three Lab Questions 4. Calculate percent change in volume (formula on board) 5. What happened when bears were placed in salt water solution? WHY? 6. What do you think would happen if we placed the bears back in a pure water solution tonight?
