Bennett Chapter 10 Part I
Bennett Chapter 10 A New Birth of Freedom 1863-1865
GETTYSBURG: THE CONFEDERACY’S HIGH-WATER MARK
Second Move Into the North June 1863 Lee moves his troops into Pennsylvania. Lee was hurt by the absence of JEB Stuart during the first two days of the attack. Gen. Longstreet disagreed with Lee on fighting at Gettysburg Gutsy thing to do but probably right
Another Change of Command Gen. Joe Hooker resigns and is replaced by Pennsylvanian Gen. George Meade
•July 1, 1863 Lt. Marcellus Jones of the 8th IL Cavalry fired the first shot at approaching Confederate troops
Little Round Top Joshua Chamberlain led Union forces holding the hill Staved off several attacks until out of ammunition Chamberlain, “Bayonets”

Devil’s Den
Results of Gettysburg Clearly the turning point in the war Union casualties-22,807 Confederate casualties-28,000 Lee retreats but is trapped by the flooded Potomac River. Meade failed to follow orders from Lincoln to pursue and finish Lee’s army.
Again, my dear general, I do not believe you appreciate the magnitude of the misfortune involved in Lee's escape. He was within your easy grasp, and to have closed upon him would, in connection with our other late successes, have ended the war. As it is, the war will be prolonged indefinitely. If you could not safely attack Lee last monday, how can you possibly do so South of the river, when you can take with you very few more than two thirds of the force you then had in hand? It would be unreasonable to expect, and I do not expect you can now effect much. Your golden opportunity is gone, and I am distressed immeasurably because of it. General George Meade
Lincoln’s letter intended for Meade was never sent.
Vicksburg The lone hold-out on the MS. River. Union troops even tried to reroute the river to get around the town Surrounded and finally fell on July 4, 1863
Conscription Both in the North and South If drafted in the North, you could get out of serving by paying $300 or… finding someone to go in your place
Draft Riots New York City had the worst riots in the nation Irish immigrants did not like the idea of fighting to free slaves that would inturn compete for their jobs. It took troops returning from Gettysburg to put down the rioting.
