Daily life in the late 1800s

Cities grow and change The industrial city Before the industrial revolution most cities existed to serve as trade, political, military or religious functions. In the industrial age factories required raw materials coming in, goods going out and being sold in the market.

Urbanization the growth of people moving from the countryside to the cities. examples of growth of cities from urbanization of workers looking for industrialized jobs

Lowell, Massachusetts it was the first cities to industrialize due to its textile factories

Chicago, Illinois had a huge meat packing industry

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania had a lot of jobs in the steel industry.

Life in the industrial city Cities were a lively and crowded place

Health conditions in the city was bad due to the burning of coal

At first city’s had poor sanitation

Eventually reforms were made and cities built water and sewer systems

The first skyscraper designed in 1883 helped solve the problem of available space in a city.

Underground railway systems solved the problem of congestion of the city streets

Electricity made home life more convenient.

The suburbs As cities became more crowded they expanded their boundaries to include the surrounding areas.
