Argumentation Basics

Defining Argumentation What does the word argument mean to you?

Forms of Argument An argument is a claim (the arguer’s position) which is supported by reasons and evidence. Note the similarities to a thesis statement – an effective thesis statement will provide your claim (stance) and the reasons (premises) that support the stance.

Under what conditions does Argument work best? A debatable issue. An arguer. An audience. Common ground. A forum. Audience outcomes.

Under what conditions does Argument Fail? No real disagreement No possibility of two or more views No uncertainty Not enough interest or importance placed in the issue.

Engaging with Issues Issues are compelling Issues often originate in dramatic life situations Current issues are related to enduring issues Issues go underground and then resurface Issues sometimes get solved, but then new ones emerge Issues seem to be getting more complex
