Gamifying Financial Literacy Fortune is a daily trivia game where registered users can log on to answer a set of 5 daily financial literacy trivia questions. They receive a score card, which shows them the points they received, any achievement badges earned, and provides links to resources about questions they answer incorrectly. Gamifying Financial Literacy La ludification de la littératie financière

Timeline | Chronologie 2015 - 2016 Planning 2016 Pilot Program 2016-2017 R&D Phase 2017 Game Launch 2015 – 2016 Planification 2016 Programme pilote 2016-2017 Phase de recherche et développement 2017 Lancement du jeu Research/Planning: In 2015-2016, FCNB began exploring the concept of gamification as a way to deliver consumer and investor information to New Brunswickers, and meet our outreach goals of increasing brand awareness and driving user engagement.   Pilot: We initially piloted the concept of a trivia game at our Community Awareness Program booths throughout the summer of 2016 as a way to confirm interest for a trivia style game. Given the positive reception, we determine this style game would form the basis of our online game. R&D : We worked with a local company to develop a web based game (we chose web based instead of downloadable app mainly because of ease of updates.) In choosing the design and concept for the game, research was conducted on our goals, audiences, demographics of gamers, and game design concepts . Some of the concepts that were most important to the player type that we were targeting were developed for the game: Challenges - encourage ongoing engagement and motivate players to continue or return to playing the game. They are also used as a promotional tool during our key months and seasonal activities. Rewards are available through Challenges (prizes), and Achievements (badges) earned for completing in-game objectives. Leaderboards Incorporating leaderboards into Fortune was to appeal to the Achievers who seek status for their progress in the game and to encourage friendly competition and loyal game play. Points System the points system was developed to be challenging without overly frustrating. Developed to address the varying levels of literacy across our player demographics (delaying the point countdown to allow users some advanced time to read the question after it appears, allowing a player to “lock in” their answer before submitting it, and a progress/countdown bar to show users available points in real time)

Results |Résultats 329 Registered Users 13,366 Visits 329 utilisateurs inscrits 13,366 visites au site Our vision was to provide an online gaming experience that would be interesting enough to entice people to sign up, incentivize users to become loyal players, and motivate them to explore the financial concepts presented beyond the game environment. We have been successful in creating a loyal user base. We have 329 registered users who have visited the site over 13,000 times since the game launched in January.

Results | Résultats Avoiding Fraud | Éviter la fraude % Correct % Incorrect Jan – Mar 2017 83% 17% Apr – Jun 2017 94% 6% Jul – Sept 2017 93% 7% * New fraud website section launched in March for Fraud Prevention Month. Additional Fraud Alerts feature launched in August. Each question is categorized into themes to match those identified in the Canadian Financial Capability Survey, and we added a 6th – Avoiding Fraud. FCNB can use player performance data to identify areas of focus in consumer and investor education outreach that may best serve New Brunswickers while remaining aligned with national strategic efforts. For example: when we studied player performance, we saw that the “Avoiding Fraud” theme was where users performed poorest. We took this as an opportunity to improve New Brunswicker’s awareness of the common characteristics of scams. We addressed this with the launch of our new Frauds and Scams section that highlights current frauds and scams targeting New Brunswickers (released in March) and followed up with a new Fraud Alerts feature (a subscription service that alerts New Brunswickers to current trends and scams targeting the province) in August. As a result, we saw a marked improvement of performance on fraud related questions.
