Industry – Storage networking Industry Association SNIA: As a vendor-neutral trade organization, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) works in conjunction with its members around the globe to make storage networking technologies understandable, simpler to implement, easier to manage, and recognized as a valued asset to business. The SNIA is dedicated to: Driving future storage industry standards Providing thought leadership and best practices Developing comprehensive educational offerings throughout the world ILM Defined: Information Lifecycle Management: the policies, processes, practices, services and tools used to align the business value of information with the most appropriate and cost effective infrastructure from the time information is created through its final disposition. Information is aligned with business requirements through management policies and service levels associated with applications, metadata, and data.

ILM Defined by Technology Leaders EMC ILM Defined: (source:www.emc.com) IBM ILM Defined: ( Source: - ww.ibm.com) “Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is a process for managing information through its lifecycle, from conception until disposal, in a manner that optimizes storage and access at the lowest cost.” “With an ILM startegy you can laign your IT infrastructure with business needs, based on information’s changing value. So you get most value from your information, at the lowest TCO-at every point in its lifecycle” SUN ILM defined: (Source: www.sun.com) “A sustainable storage strategy that balances the cost of storing and managing information with its business value. ILM provides a practical methodology for aligning storage costs with business priorities” HP ILM Defined : (Source: www.hp.com/ilm) “ILM is a set of policies, solutions, architectures, and services to manage information effectively, automatically, and quickly—from the time the data is created to the time it’s no longer needed.” ORACLE ILM Defined: ( Source: - www.oracle.com) “Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is a combination of processes, policies, software and hardware so that the appropriate technology can be used for each phase of the lifecycle of the data.”

ILM Defined by Storage Vendors NETWORK APPLIANCE: (Source: http://www.netapp.com) Hitachi Data System: (Source: http://blogs.hds.com/hu/) “ILM is about everything; therefore ILM is about nothing. “ “I have no clue what information life cycle means. All the definitions I have heard so far sound like data life cycle management. HDS is a storage company and our core competence is storage and data services. Unlike all the other storage vendors, we are still stuck on DLM” At NetApp, our big picture statement of what we do is "Simplifying Data Management". Dave Hitz CTO Network Appliance “At HDS we know what a data life cycle (DLM) is and we can build storage products that can be optimized for the life cycle of data and the applications that access that data during its life.” Hu Yoshida, CTO of Hitachi Data Systems

ILM Defined by Industry Analysts “ILM is not just a technology—it is a combination of processes and technologies that determines how data flows through an environment. By doing so, it helps end users manage data from the moment it is created to the time it is no longer needed.” “ILM is a catch-all that can mean just about anything “ Steve Duplessie, Founder and Senior Analyst from Enterprise Strategy Group "ILM is really everything from when information is created to when you get rid of it, and everything in between“ “ILM is not a product, it's a concept, a strategy” Phil Sargeant, Gartner research vice president for storage “ILM isn't just about e-mail archiving and tiered storage. “ “Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is a process for maintaining information storage at the least possible cost, while concurrently maintaining appropriate levels of availability.” “ILM is a process, not a technology, that enables an organization to manage data to meet organizational objectives. The process provides persistent access and use rights, ensures secure access, and provides the tools to collect, organize, maintain, archive, access, analyze, and deliver information.” “ILM is not a discrete product, solution, or technology. It is in fact a value-based discipline comprising systems, policies, and processes.”
