Heat and Change of State Thornburg When an ice cube melts, it absorbs heat from its surroundings. The liquid water holds a temperature of 0 ˚ C.
Latent Heat of Phase Changes.  There are 4 phases (states) of matter.  Solid- definite shape and volume, has the least energy (ice)  Liquid- takes.

Melting During the melting process is a physical change of a solid to a liquid by the addition of energy and heat The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid is the melting point An example would be ice to water

Sublimation This is the process when a solid becomes a gas.

Freezing This is the physical change of a liquid to a solid. Freezing involves a loss of energy in the form of heat by the liquid and can be represented by the following reaction ( liquid to solid + energy)

Vaporization Is the process of converting a liquid into a gas.

Condensation The conversion of a gas to a liquid.

Deposition Is a process where a gas changes phase and turns directly in solid without passing through the liquid phase.
