Changes in Matter

Physical changes Physical change: any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not change it into another substance Still the same substance after the change Examples? Changes of State Water changes to ice or water vapor Is it still water? Has its chemical composition changed at all?

Chemical change Chemical change: a change in matter that produces one or more new substances Atoms rearrange to form new substances Results in different physical properties

Lab Experiment Safety goggles Materials Read through Directions Everyone in group should participate Clean up before timer goes off I can check groups before timer goes off

directions Create a hypothesis Record data before and after experiment Today, skip Investigation 1 (we don’t have time for this one today, we will do it tomorrow)
