Physical Properties
Physical Properties: Properties can be observed without changing the substance Properties observed using your five senses
Physical Properties include: Color Luster Mass Magnetism Size Smell Shape Taste Volume Density Boiling point Conduction Melting point Malleability State of matter Ductility Hardness
Luster Shininess The way light is reflected off the surface
Density The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance M/V
Conduction Heat transfer through a substance or from one substance to another by direct contact of molecules
Malleability Ability to be hammered out into a thin sheet
Ductility Ability to be stretched into a thin wire
Chemical Properties
Chemical Properties: Properties that can not be observed without changing the substance into a new substance. You don’t know that a substance has that property until the chemical change is observed. Matter that has the ability to change into new matter that has different properties.
Chemical Properties include: Flammability Toxicity pH – acid or base Reactivity to water Reactivity to oxygen Reactivity to an acid Explosivity Corrosiveness
Flammability Ability to burn
Toxicity Ability to poison
pH Acid or base
Reactivity to Water
Reactivity to Oxygen
Reactivity to an Acid
Corrosiveness Gradual wearing away of metal due to a chemical reaction in which a metal element is changed into a metallic compound
Explosivity The property of being explosive which is to burst or shatter violently and noisily as a result of rapid combustion, excessive internal pressure, or other process.
