STEM CELLS.  Where do the different cells and tissues in your body come from?  Incredible as it seems, every cell was produced by mitosis from a small.

Cell Differentiation and Specialization With Stem Cells

What are some different types of human cells?

Egg with sperm

Muscle

Fat

Neurons

Red and white Blood cells

How does the DNA in different cell types compare? We begin life as a SINGLE cell. Then, grow by cell division (MITOSIS). Every BODY (somatic)cell has the SAME DNA!

Life’s Greatest Miracle http://www.teachersdomain.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.cell.embryoshape/ Watch to learn how cells differentiate. Answer the following questions: What causes cells to be different? How do cells “talk”? What “turns on” a gene?

Stems Cells Stem Cells are cells which have not differentiated, yet. http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/tdc02_vid_stemcellvid/

Pluripotent Stem Cells Can specialize by becoming a variety of different types of cells. What diseases might Be cured by using them?

Ethical Debate What is the most reliable source of stem cells? What is the ethical concern?
