Diffusion The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration The cell membrane is a selectively permeable membrane...it lets some things pass and not others (e.g. coffee filter) Diffusion occurs until there is equilibrium...an equal number of particles on both sides
osmosis the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane (e.g. sponge) Osmosis occurs when water particles move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration

Reverse osmosis - water goes from low to high e.g. desalinate water, purify syrup
