Factorise 𝑎𝑥, 𝑎𝑥𝑦 Recall how to distribute: Distribution allows operations to break BEMDAS without changing the answer. e.g. 2× 1+3 =2×1+2×3

Factorise 𝑎𝑥, 𝑎𝑥𝑦 Write down what a factor is. A factor is a number that divides evenly (“goes into”) another number. Write down the factors of 12 and 20, and find the highest common factor. Write down the factors of 8 and 8𝑥, and find the highest common factor. Write down the factors of 6𝑥 and 8, then find the highest common factor.

Factorise 𝑠𝑥−𝑡𝑦+𝑡𝑥−𝑠𝑦 This is called factorising by grouping. Take 𝑟𝑡−4𝑡+2𝑟−8 as an example. There is no common factor for all four terms. Factorise 𝑟𝑡−4𝑡. Factorise 2𝑟−8. Write the expression as the sum of the answers to a) and b). 𝑡 𝑟−4 +2(𝑟−4) Note that (𝑟−4) is now a common factor. Factorising again gives: (𝑟−4)(𝑡+2)

Factorise 𝑠𝑥−𝑡𝑦+𝑡𝑥−𝑠𝑦 Write the expression as the sum of a) and b). Note that 3 2+𝑥 +𝑐(𝑥+2) both have (𝑥+2). (𝑥+2 and 2+𝑥 are the same thing mathematically). Factorising gives (𝑥+2)(3+𝑐)

Factorise 𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥+𝑐 These expressions are called quadratic trinomials. We will cover two methods for factorising quadratic trinomials. Firstly, guide number. e.g. Factorise 𝑥 2 +7𝑥+12

Factorise 𝑥 2 − 𝑎 2 When an expression can be written as a square minus a square, (i.e. 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 ) it is called a difference of two squares. The factorisation can be written simply (𝑥−𝑦)(𝑥+𝑦). e.g. 𝑥 2 − 𝑎 2 = 𝑥−𝑎 𝑥+𝑎 e.g. 𝑚 2 − 𝑛 2 =(𝑚−𝑛)(𝑚+𝑛) e.g. 7 2 − 5 2 = 7−5 7+5 = 2 12 =24 If the two terms are not squares, they must be turned into squares first: e.g. 𝑥 2 −16= 𝑥 2 − 4 2 =(𝑥−4)(𝑥+4)
