Government Regulations for Disease Prevention Target: I will be able to explain how government regulations influence health promotion and disease prevention   Department of Health and Human Services (HHS): agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services Pg. 55

Prevents and manages the impacts of infectious diseases and chronic diseases and conditions Provides access to quality health care and health care coverage Supports wellness efforts such as protecting mental health, preventing risky behaviors such as tobacco use and substance abuse, promotes better nutrition and more physical activity About the HHS

FDA: Food and Drug Administration- a federal agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services FDA helps to speed up innovations that make medicines more effective, safer, and affordable

The FDA regulates/ assures the safety of: Foods: dietary supplements, bottled water, food additives, infant formulas Drugs: prescription over-the-counter drugs Biologics: vaccines, blood and blood products, tissue and tissue products

Medical Devices: tongue depressors, bedpans, pacemakers, dental devices, surgical implants, prosthetics Cosmetics: color additives found in makeup, skin moisturizers and cleansers, nail polish and perfume Veterinary Products: livestock feeds, pet foods, veterinary drugs and devices About the FDA
