Overview DMPRoadmap update Improved performance & new features Co-development External contributions Machine-actionable DMPs Next steps maDMPs and next steps…future events, continuing to develop use cases and pilot projects Begin implementing once we release the new system

https://github.com/DMPRoadmap DMPRoadmap update https://github.com/DMPRoadmap The Digital Curation Centre and California Digital Library are a year into our partnership, announced at IDCC 2016, and since then we’ve made significant progress merging our technical platforms as well as our planning and outreach efforts for the next generation of machine-actionable DMPs Converged on a single codebase, based on DMPonline w/additional features from the DMPTool Each maintain our own brands, but working together to comanage and codevelop a single system Our joint roadmap is available on GitHub wiki, along with other documentation, e.g., draft guidelines for contributors Timeline: DCC plans to migrate to the Roadmap codebase in the next month; DMPTool will migrate afterward once all features added from MVP list & tested with user group

How we’re working NASA.gov - ISS043E099306 04/09/2015 Our co-development process – not exactly like working on the International Space Station, but we are international, UC3 and DCC dev teams working together Already received code contributions Weiwei Shi who leads the Canadian DMP Assistant project, as well as a French team at the CNRS running a local instance of DMPonline Local installations inventory also on GitHub – trying to harness all of these projects to consolidate value of individual efforts for entire DMP community Developer guidelines in draft form, available on GitHub, dev meeting tomorrow afternoon for developers who are interested in contributing to the project NASA.gov - ISS043E099306 04/09/2015

Bigger team, bigger voice More development effort now pooled Roadmap informed by user groups in UK & US Involvement in international fora e.g. RDA, FORCE11 More scope to pursue new areas of activity e.g. machine-actionable DMPs Rasande Tyskar / Flickr CC BY-NC

Improved performance Major revisions in light of scalability issues encountered during Academy of Finland call, including: New data model – simplified and more intuitive Revised database schema with migrations to transfer existing data from old schema to new Refactoring the code to reduce the number of queries and to isolate data access from the views

Multi-lingual support

ORCID integration

ORCID integration

New editor Substance Forms: http://substance.io Substance Forms is a Javascript library used to create better web forms we will replace the current editor with Substance Forms widget, open source developed by team in Austria – here’s a glimpse formatting toolbar appears when you highlight text, lists, tables commenting feature allows you to highlight and annotate sections of text, respond in a thread simpler, cleaner, also contributes to better performance

Other new things UX work on signin process, Shib workflows for other federations via eduGAIN Support for signin with ORCID – future enhancement Helping us redesign top navigation menu and organize info resources – e.g., guidance and help menu …

Other new things UX work on create plan workflow to incorporate FundRef – related to maDMPs use cases Accessibility for disabled users Additional features from roadmap to MVP list – see GitHub …

Machine-actionable DMPs Data discovery Capacity planning Aggregation/integration Policy compliance Goal to think of DMPs as key elements of a networked data management ecosystem: Connected via a shared vocabulary Actionable by humans and software Versioned Dynamic inventory linked to research outputs From Flickr by highwaysengland, CC BY 2.0

Machine-actionable DMPs DMPonline themes Mappings Common format? Themes used to tag guidance in DMPonline refined and adapted for US/EU/generalized requirements Now 14, feedback from community, will implement in new platform and explore potential for basic tagging (e.g. for text mining sections of DMPs) Working with repositories to test mapping themes to other vocabularies DDI working group for social science repos Workshop takeaway – Tomasz may discuss this further during his presentation: -eventually we may need a common format/standard/protocol for DMPs to facilitate info exchange between systems, particularly via APIs to both read and write to DMPs; format must accommodate existing standards -Amber Leahey: having a common format would make it easier to develop and test new use cases over time From Flickr by Steve Johnson, CC BY 2.0

Machine-actionable DMPs Workshop takeaways Integration of existing systems Tailored guidance Potential of ORCID IDs, other PIDs Refocus DMPs on benefits of planning to researchers, but keep in mind that funders still drive demand -currently focus seems to be on integration of existing systems that researchers and other stakeholders are already using (ELNs, CRIS systems, repos, etc); goal to autopopulate some fields across systems, especially admin info about researchers, projects, outputs -consensus about DMPs as an educational tool, but only if we can offer precise, relevant info and Rob Hooft made a compelling case for using DMPs to connect researchers with right experts at appropriate points along the way -this goes along with a universal concept of “active” - actively managing data throughout the lifecycle and capturing this in the DMP -ORCID IDs seem to have reached critical mass that one high priority is to explore what/how to push and pull info using this hook; other PIDs ripe for exploration too -Refocus DMPs on benefits of planning to researchers but be realistic that the demand, at least in US/UK/EU, is mainly driven by funders so we need to work closely with this stakeholder group as well

Next steps: maDMP pilots maDMP pilot projects to look at existing DMPs and see what info can be made actionable: NSF-funded ocean science repo called BCO-DMO at Woods Hole talking to biomedical community, Biosharing API, ethics review institutional pilot: Purdue University identified -everyone wants to be a pilot user – we’ll be taking you up on these offers and continue with refining ideas and use cases at future maDMP events -Sharing outputs from the workshop asap From Flickr by Allen, CC BY 2.0
