Session Overview What is Master Data and Master Data Management? Introducing Microsoft Master Data Services (MDS) Planning MDS Projects Implementing MDS Projects

What is Master Data and MDM? Master Data – Key nouns of the business – slow changing – shared across systems – key to transactional and analytic systems Master Data Management – Software and Processes for creating and maintaining an authoritative view of master data including policies and procedures for access, update, modification, and viewing -- between systems and across the enterprise People Customers Vendors Sales people Employees Partners Patients Things Products Organizational units Recipes Parts Storage bins Documents Places Stores Wells Power lines Geographical areas Abstract Contracts Warrantees Time Metrics Add stewardship

Why do you need MDM? Or both Difficulty coordinating multiple systems Warehouse or Analytic App Add 15 attributes to product xrb019 Information workers can’t edit dimensions ERP - USA Resolve XYZ Corp’s Address Does product xrb019 = fft019? Difficulty coordinating multiple systems Difficulty managing dimensions Or both ERP - Europe

Data Platform Vision Enterprise Data Platform Platform For All Data Services Query Analysis Reporting Integration Sync Search Master Data Entity Data Model Platform For All Data OLAP FILE XML RDBMS Mobile and Desktop Cloud Storage Datacenter Dynamic Development The amount and variety of information that organizations need to work with continues to explode. Myriad new forms of information are becoming integral to business operations, from digitized images and video to sensor information from RFID tags. At the same time, growing regulatory compliance in a globalized business world requires that organizations store more information securely and that the information is available at all times. In parallel with these driving needs, the cost of disk storage has dramatically decreased, enabling businesses to store more data per dollar invested. With ever more data being stored, users and decision makers must be able to quickly sift through mountains of data to find relevant information and gain business insight. Pervasive Insight Enabling customers of all sizes to derive value from ALL data, birth through archival

Master Data Methodology Envision Plan Develop Stabilize Deploy Your methodology variant will probably work as well for MDM as it does for other projects

Pick the right thing to solve Master Data Management software is only part of the solution. MDM implementations must accompany changes in processes, procedures and policies – this usually can’t happen overnight Select a domain and problem set that adds value and can be leveraged in future phases

MDM Project Drivers Number of: Domains (Models) Entities Attributes 12/4/2018 MDM Project Drivers Number of: Domains (Models) Entities Attributes Hierarchies Subscribing Systems Security Profiles Number and Complexity of Workflow Scenarios Source Systems The drivers in an MDM system have an almost multiplicative effect in determining the effort(cost) and the likelihood of failure. A project can have a large number in any of the categories, or even several of the categories above and still be in great shape. A project that has large numbers in all of the categories should be approached with skill and caution. Intentionally missing from this list is the size of the domain. While a million or ten million member model takes more effort for initial build, these models usually have far fewer attributes, rules and hierarchies. MDM Project Governing Principles 12/4/2018 MDM Project Governing Principles Start small – especially when you are learning Solve a real problem owned by a sponsor Scan the horizon, drive to your destination Engage strong technical resources Engage knowledgeable business resources Process is more important than technology Solving master data for the entire enterprise is a worthy goal, but that journey should be approached as a series of small steps. Most organizations have some degree of delegated control, asynchronous schedules, alternate priorities, and different pressures across subdivisions of the larger organization. It is unusual to find a single business user who is the single expert in every context and (even around a single subject or domain) and it is nearly impossible to find an organization with multiple systems where there are disjoint priorities. It stands to reason that if a solution will not work for a subset of a problem and not demonstrate value by harmonizing 2 or more areas, that it is unlikely to stand a better chance of being accepted by a larger audience. While benefits accrue quickly as stakeholders are added, costs and project risks accelerate as well. In our experience finding a sponsor who is paying for and is accountable for project results is the best path to MDM success. When an organization has real pain to solve, the project gets proper focus, funding, and support. We are not suggesting that you shut out all other potential stakeholders, systems and problem areas – you should take stock of them – we simply suggest that they are approached in phases. MDM’s architecture allows you to easily add entities, members, roles, rules, hierarchies, collections, subscriptions, and versions as you go. It is unlikely that you’ll have to start over or really even have to pay that much for your initial oversights. Designing Models with Microsoft MDM -- Copyright (c) 2008, Microsoft Corporation
