World War II Begins in Europe German Expansion 1936 – Rhineland –former German territory Alliance with Mussolini 1937 – Alliance with Japan 1938 – takes Austria and Sudetenland 1939 – takes all of Czechoslovakia and makes a non-agression pact with Stalin – planned to split Poland. 1939 – September 1 attacks Poland  officially starts World War II because France and Britain had promised to protect their ally, Poland, if Hitler attacks. September 3 – Britain and France declare war on Germany). Blitzkreig (lightning war) – working with Stalin, it takes two months to conquer Poland. 1940 – Spring – Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg 1940 – June 22 – France 1940 – July – Battle of Britain – RAF v.
