The Housing Division Moving Forward MMANC Annual Conference October 2016
Housing of the Past! Multiple Fiscal Findings from HUD No Innovative Projects No One Understood HUD Limited involvement with Non-Profits All Federal Resources were primarily being used for Internal Projects. Assets were sitting idle There were no external partnerships Fiscal Accountability
Addressing the Past to Move Forward Addressing Federal Findings – Head On! Taking the Time to Learn Meet with HUD & HCD Contacted Similar Valley Communities Developed a solution before stating the problem Finding the organization assets. Learning how various resources worked. Creating a Fiscally Accountable Fund that would work. Developed Partnerships
Creating Partnerships Realizing which Organizations/Departments create a good partnership The Good ones are hard to find. If the program is willing to work with you, you may be good to go! Some programs just need a little help! Realizing which departments/Organizations DO NOT create a good Relationship. Sometimes you have to be willing to look outside your community for a program. Knowing when to cut bait! “Show Me the Money!”
Listening to whom… Partnering with whom… Went to City Council and Town Hall Meetings Listened to HUD and HCD Listened to the Non-Profit Organizations Took the Community Meetings outside City Hall. Found Organizations that had proven success. Partnered with Developers that had the same interest. Found non-profits that served specific clientele. Found organizations that had an interest in our Community.
In Closing The changes I have seen: The challenges I have seen: Development of Partnerships! Bridging of Communication gaps! Leveraging Funds using Internal/External Sources Fiscal Accountability Impacting & Investing in the Community. The challenges I have seen: Ensuring your program stays dynamic! You are not going to please everyone! Ensuring you are always doing the ‘right’ thing! Not everyone wants you to be successful. Intentional roadblocks
