A recipe is a set of instructions that describe how to prepare or make a culinary dish. Recipe Obr. 1 We can find recipes in a cookbook. A cookbook contains a collection of recipes.

Modern culinary recipes normally consist of several components: The name of the dish. How much time it will take to prepare the dish. The ingredients and their quantities. Necessary equipment needed to prepare the dish. An ordered list of preparation steps. The number of servings that the recipe will provide. A photograph of the finished dish. Modern recipes Obr. 2

Name of the dish Many dishes have specific names: Buffalo wings – chicken wings marinated in a spicy sauce, broiled, served with blue cheese sauce. Others are simply described: Lamb stew with almond Many are named for particular places. They are regional or local dishes: Yourkshire pudding Welsh cakes Obr. 3

Ingredients and quantities Recipes specify which ingredients are used to prepare a specific dish. Vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts, herbs and spices come from plants, while meat, eggs, and dairy products come from animals. The list of ingredients contains also their quantities. Quantities in recipes: tsp- teaspoon tbsp- tablespoon lb - libra (0,45 kg) cup Obr. 4

Potato Leek Soup Recipe 3 large leeks, use only the white and pale green parts, chop. 2 Tbsp butter 2 cups water 2 cups chicken broth 2 lbs potatoes, peeled, diced marjoram – dash 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme tabasco sauce or other red chili sauce salt & pepper Soup recipe Obr. 5

Preparation steps I. Cook leeks in butter with salt and pepper in a medium sized sauce pan. Cover pan, cook on low heat for 10 min. Check often, do not brown the leeks. Add water, broth, and potatoes, bring to a low simmer and cook for 20 minutes. Scoop about half of the soup mixture into a blender, puree and return to pan. Obr. 6

Preparation steps II. Serves: 4 – 6 Cook time: 30 min Add marjoram, parsley, and thyme. Add a few dashes of chili sauce to taste. Add some freshly ground pepper. 1 – 2 teaspoons salt or more to taste. Obr. 6
