Sci. 3-2 Moons Pages 75-82

A. Satellites are natural or artificial bodies that revolve around larger bodies like planets.

B. Except for Mercury and Venus, all planets have natural satellites called moons.

C. Earth’s moon is also known as Luna.

D. The composition of the moon is similar to Earth’s mantle. 1) It is thought that a large object hit the earth while it was forming. Since Earth was still molten, a part of Earth’s mantle was blasted into orbit around Earth to form the moon.

E. The moon’s phases are caused by the moon’s orbit around the Earth E. The moon’s phases are caused by the moon’s orbit around the Earth. At different times of the month, we view different amounts of sunlight on the moon because of the moon’s position relative to the sun and the Earth.

F. Eclipse- when the shadow of one celestial body fall on another

1) Lunar Eclipse occurs when the earth’s shadow falls on the moon.

2) Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon is between the sun and the Earth, causing the moon’s shadow to fall on the Earth.

G. The plane of the moon’s orbit around the earth is tilted by 5 degrees relative to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the sun. This is why we do not get an eclipse every month. G

H. Moons of other Planets

1) Mars- 2 moons called Phobos and Deimos

2) Jupiter- 28 known moons. 4 largest- Ganymede, Callisto, Io, & Europa

3) Saturn- 30 known moons. Titan is one moon with a thick hazy orange atmosphere.

4) Uranus-21 moons. 3 moons were just discovered in 1999, Miranda broke apart and reformed.

5) Neptune- 8 moons, Triton revolves around the planet in a backward orbit.

6) Pluto- 1 moon- Charon

Mercury- no moons Venus- no moons
