Shading techniques…controlling VALUE Creating the illusion of depth

Value = the lightness or darkness of an area or object. The value scale goes from pure white to pure black

Tone = the degree of light or dark on an object.

Shading = depicting depth on a flat surface through various levels of light and dark tones or values.

Blending = shading technique involving softening or evenly spreading out original drawing strokes.

Hatching= shading technique that uses fine, parallel lines placed close together.

Cross-hatching = extension of hatching where another layer of alternating lines is used.

Stippling = shading technique using dots or short dabbing strokes.

Scribbling = shading technique that uses random scribbled, circular marks made without lifting up the pencil or pen.

Contrast = strong differences in value, lines, size, shape, etc.. Value contrast is very important…it adds emphasis to areas and is used often to create a focal point (area of emphasis)

Value contrast is very important…placing lights against darks enhances contrast and adds interest and variety to your work
