Polarity

Polarity –a positive and negative end. Bond Polarity – a covalent bond where the electronegativity difference between the atoms is greater than 0.4 but less than 1.7. The higher electronegative element is the negative end of the bond (the low electronegative element is the positive end). Polar Molecule– the entire molecule has a positive and a negative end.

Bond Polarity C-H Bond C-F Bond N-Cl Bond

Polar Molecules are a result of molecular Geometry (use VSEPR) ABE Formula Shape Polarity AB2 AB2E AB2E2 AB3 AB3E AB4

For Ionic Compounds…. All Ionic Compounds are POLAR…. The cation is the + ion and the anion is the – ion. Example: CsF

When Making a solution….remember that… Solute—substance being dissolved Solvent—what does the dissolving “Like dissolves like”—means Polar molecule solvents dissolve polar solutes AND Non-polar solvents dissolve non-polar solutes Water = polar alcohol=non-polar

Would water dissolve…. CaF? CF4?
