SHAME GRIEF SUFFERING January 21, 2018

The Shame of Our Sin When you sin, you should feel ashamed! SHAME: “the painful feeling arising from the consciousness of something dishonorable, improper, ridiculous, etc., done by oneself or another.” When you sin, you should feel ashamed! Romans 6:20-21 (who they used to be) 1 Corinthians 15:34 “Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.” Philippians 3:17-19 (some not walking as they should) Jeremiah 6:15-17 (about Judah and their sin)

The Shame of Our Sin In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve sinned. In Genesis 4, Cain murdered his brother. In Genesis 6, God was sorry He had made man. Judges 2:6-10 Sin progresses from bad to worse. Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.” Romans 1:32 “Although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”

The Shame of Our Sin The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. (Edmund Burke) There was a day when people tried to HIDE their sin because they were ASHAMED of their sin. 1 Peter 1:14-16 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

The Shame of Our Sin The Shame of the Cross The cross is a common symbol of Christianity. The cross was an instrument of torture and death; it was also a symbol of great shame. Galatians 6:14 “May it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Shame of Our Sin The Shame of the Cross “The religion of the Christians is foolish, inasmuch as they worship a crucified man, and even the instrument itself of his punishment. They are said to worship the head of a donkey.”

The Shame of Our Sin The Shame of the Cross Everett Ferguson: “As repulsive as that graffito is to Christians now, it conveys strongly how contemptible the idea of a crucified Lord was to pagan thinking.”

The Shame of Our Sin The Shame of the Cross Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.'”

The Shame of the Cross Caecilius: “Christians suffer from sick delusions and a senseless and crazy superstition. Not least among the monstrosities of their faith is the fact that they worship one who had been crucified.” Martin Hengel: “A crucified messiah, the son of God, must have seemed a contradiction in terms to anyone, Jew, Greek, Roman or barbarian, asked to believe such a claim, and it would certainly have been thought offensive and foolish.” 1 Corinthians 1:18, 23-24

The Shame of Our Sin The Shame of the Cross On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame. O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me. To that old rugged cross I will ever by true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear.
