Year 1 Meet the Teacher 11th September 2018 Mrs D’Souza Miss Crowe Miss Davies and Mrs Stevens Welcome to Year 1

Autumn 1 Transition takes place into more formal learning in Year 1. The days combine informal activities together with more formal lessons. Afternoon play is taken as and when necessary and certainly in the first few weeks.

Pick Up and Drop Off In the morning: 8.40 - 8.50am Once roof work is complete: Leave your child at the yellow line and they will then walk to the playground. Please do not enter the building, as this can create a safeguarding issue. There will be a Key Stage 1 teacher on duty each day. The Year 1 teachers will not be able to speak to you at the door, so please write a note in the contact book or leave a message at the office. At the end of the day: 3.15pm Please pick your child up from the Year 1 playground. Please wave to alert us that you have arrived. The children will be in a line and we will send them over to you in order. Feel free to come and chat after school if you need to, but please wait until all the other children have been dismissed. If you don’t pick up your child, then please inform us of who will be collecting them. Please write in the contact book, telephone the school or write a letter on separate paper. If this is a regular arrangement, please send in a note at the beginning of term to confirm (even if grandparents regularly collect).

Phonics Children have been grouped according to the phase in which they are working and this will continue. The group is suited to the ability of your child and the groupings are fluid. Common Exception Words will be sent home, plus other material on an ongoing basis . Spellings will begin this half term. Reading books are to be brought in on a Friday and a new book will be sent home on the same day.

Phonics Screening There will be a national screening test week commencing 10th June 2019. Children are given a list of words to read. We assess the children half termly to check they are on track and we screen them at least termly. Should a child not pass the screening, they will resit it in Year 2.

English and Maths Setting for Phonics will continue. We will group the children into sets across the year group for Maths and teaching in these groups will commence shortly before the October half term. Once the children are ready, we will begin to set them for English. This is likely to be after Christmas.

P.E. 1 indoor and 1 outdoor session a week: Outdoor PE Wednesday afternoon for all classes Indoor PE 1R Friday 1S Thursday 1V Thursday. Earrings must be taken out before your child comes to school or they must be able to do it themselves. Ears cannot be taped. Long hair must be tied back. Please provide a tracksuit for the colder weather when we do outdoor P.E. and ensure that all clothes are named. If your child does not have a kit in school we will try to provide a kit from lost property but otherwise they will not be able to do P.E.

Contact Books Contact books will be checked daily when your child places it in the box in class. If you would rather speak to us in person, then we are available at the end of the day. When notes have been seen, we will initial them and respond if necessary.

Mathletics As a school we encourage the children to use Mathletics at home. Teachers will regularly set new activities; this is to support their learning in school. Children will already have their passwords from Reception. We will send them out again for you if required. Please let us know if you do not have access to the Internet.

Trips Autumn - We will be having a visit from the Freshwater Theatre Company on 15th November. Letter to follow. Spring – We are hoping to visit a farm as part of our science learning. Summer – We will be visiting Hall Place as part of our Science topic; How does your garden grow?

Other Information The children will receive homework every Monday and it needs to be returned by the following Monday. Spellings will also be sent out on a Monday and tested the following Monday. ‘Reading for Pleasure’ books will be sent home on Monday and returned the following Monday. Your child has already been given their first book. Book bags need to fit in small trays or on small pegs, so they should only contain books and letters. No large bags are required.

Other Information Encourage independence Show and tell Reading Naming Please support your child to dress and undress independently, to take care of property and to be responsible for tidying up. Show and tell If your child has show and tell that is related to the topic, or a celebration of talent, then we will endeavour to give them the opportunity to share. This may be on a different day to when they bring it in. If your child has something to be shown in Celebration Assembly please ensure that it is brought into school by Thursday so that it may be added to the PowerPoint. Reading More focus on inference and deduction, in collaboration with sounding out. Naming All items of uniform, including shoes and coats, must be labelled with your child’s name.

Uniform The uniform policy was sent by Parentmail before the summer holidays.

Help at home… Phonics sounds and Common Exception Words. Reading regularly – including comprehension questions. Counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Recalling number bonds to 10 and 20 and doubles. Encouraging your child to learn days of the week and months of the year – including how to spell them. Encouraging the use of the cursive script.
