Vista del Lago Advisory and FlexTime 2017-2018

What is advisory? Why is it important? An advisory system is a simple method that ensures that no secondary school student becomes anonymous – they promote students’ social, emotional and moral growth, while providing personal and academic guidance. Golderg, M. 1998 Manning, M. & Saddlemire, R, 1996 Why is it important? Research shows that students who do not feel an attachment to school personnel tend to have poorer attendance and drop out more than students who perceive they are part of a supportive, caring school environment. Galassi, Gulledge & Cox, 1997

Purpose of Advisory Create positive and caring relationships among staff and students, which promotes an emotionally and physically safe environment for all students. A support system to promote high levels of learning for all students. School wide exposure to relevant and important issues, which include college and career readiness as well as social and emotional growth. Adapted from Educators for Social Responsibility, 2006
