Figurative Language

“Kate inched over her own thoughts like a measuring worm “Kate inched over her own thoughts like a measuring worm.” — East of Eden, by John Steinbeck

1. Simile: A simile is a figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things with the help of the words “like” or “as.” Therefore, it is a direct comparison. “Kate inched over her own thoughts like a measuring worm.” — East of Eden, by John Steinbeck John is as slow as a snail Her cheeks are red like a rose.

What is this an example of?

2. Personification: a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given human attributes. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings. “Little bread-and-butterflies kiss the tulips. And the sun is like a toy balloon. There are get up in the morning glories. In the golden afternoon.” – Alice In Wonderland “Because I could not stop for Death – He kindly stopped for me – The Carriage held but just Ourselves – And Immortality.” – Emily Dickinson

Describe what you see, smell, hear, and feel? (5 sentences)

What are your answers an example of? 3. Imagery: Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses.

Example: A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky Way. – "Daffodils" by William Wordsworth

What is this an example of? 4. Metaphor A comparison between two things that are unrelated, but which share some common characteristics. The assignment was a breeze. (This implies that the assignment was not difficult.) Chaos is the breeding ground of order.

What is symbolism?

5. Symbolism: Generally, it is an object representing another, to give an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. The dove is a symbol of peace. “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts,”
