Annotate That! How to interact with text… Research 4 Today

Annotation: (noun) a note of explanation or comment added to a text or diagram: “marginal annotations” Synonyms: note * notation * comment

What Are Annotations? Annotations are when the reader stops briefly to write down his ideas directly on the text as he reads. By interacting with the text, readers are better able to understand what the text is stating.

What purpose does annotating serve? Sample… Let’s look at a sample of annotations on the next slide. Try to answer the following question: What purpose does annotating serve?

What purpose does annotating serve? The purpose of annotating text… Takes our reading beyond the surface of the text Helps us interact with the text by jotting our thinking – leaving TRACKS after we read LASTLY… When readers jot down their thoughts they remember why they wrote something and are better able to learn, understand, and remember what they read.

Ways to interact with text…using TEXT CODES something known ✔ new learning L a question ? or Q confusion ?? important information ★ exciting/surprising information ! connection (Reminds me… texts/movies/news, life experiences) R vocabulary (Define words or slang) V inferences/interpretation (of what is happening in the text) I

More Examples… Draw a picture when a visual connection is appropriate. Re-write, paraphrase, or summarize a difficult passage or moment. Describe a new perspective/POV you may now have.

Get ready to… Leave Tracks of Your Thinking! Practice Let’s practice annotations on the informational text “Texting Addictions.” Get ready to… Leave Tracks of Your Thinking!
