Pre-Write Tips Punctuating a quote within a quote: Example: “ ‘What’s grown ups going to say?’ cried Piggy again” (Golding 92). Make sure you have selected two strong quotes that you will be able to analyze and relate to your topic. All quotes need citations.
Example for Topic #1 (Symbolism) “In color the shell was deep cream, touched here and there with fading pink” (Golding 16). "Exposure to the air had bleached the yellow and pink to near-white, and transparency. Ralph felt a kind of affectionate reverence for the conch, even though he had fished the thing out of the lagoon himself" (Golding 78).
Example for Topic #2 (historical paragraph) People are evil “[Hitler’s] policies inflicted human suffering on an unprecedented scale and resulted in the death of tens of millions of people, including more than 20 million in the Soviet Union and six million Jews in Europe” (Biography.com). “Hitler's eugenic policies also targeted children with physical and developmental disabilities, and later authorized a euthanasia program for disabled adults” (Biography.com).
Thesis Tips Thesis MUST include title, author, and your main points of the body paragraph. It shouldn’t just summarize the book. Use the literary present tense (use present tense verbs when writing about events that take place in a work of fiction). Example thesis for topic 1: In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, three significant symbols that alter their meaning over the course of the novel are the conch, the boys’ clothes, and Roger. Example thesis for topic 2: The deaths of Piggy and Simon in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and the recent historical event of September 11,2001, demonstrate that people are essentially evil.
