The Reign of Terror

The Reign of Terror Maximilien Robespierre and radicals – Jacobins take control of National Assembly Create the “National Convention” – new legislative body

Robespierre’s Accusations Against King Louis XVI: King is a traitor to France He attempted to leave France Collaborated with the Austrians Conspired against the revolution – wants to take back power

The Jacobins

Robespierre’s Plan: Sell all the church lands Tax all citizens equally Fight the Austrians as revolutionaries Put the King on trial for treason (betrayal of one’s country) Execute all traitors of the revolution

King on Trial Anyone who speaks on behalf of the King would be executed as traitors. Anyone who does not vote to convict the King of treason and sentence him to death would be executed as a traitor. King is sentenced to death (along with his wife)

King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are guillotined.

The Reign of Terror Committee on Public Safety: Created to "deal with “threats” to the revolution (ie. People would be executed for not agreeing with Robespierre and radicals).

Traitors of the Revolution Anyone who does not go along with the radical phase of revolution is a traitor – executed Anyone who isn’t working to solve the problems of France – executed Anyone who said “down with the Republic” - executed

Traitors of the Revolution Anyone who had a book with the King’s seal on it - executed Anyone who was a noble or previous supporter of the King or Estate system – executed Anyone who was a high clergy member - executed

The Reign of Terror 40,000 French citizens were executed in two years by the radicals.

National Convention turns on their leader (Robespierre) July 1794

Robespierre is Arrested…

Robespierre is executed…

Robespierre is Made an Example of. No More Terror! No More Radicals!

Terror ENDS when moderates in the National Convention write a new constitution and create a new government – a Five Man “Directory”

… It is made up of the upper-middle class … It is made up of the upper-middle class. (hmmm… what people might not be happy about that again? Lesson learned?? Hmmm…what could POSSIBLY happen next….)
