8 in 10 adults in the U.S. use the Internet. 92% of 18-29 year olds 42% Adults 65+ years 63% Latinos 64% African Americans From these numbers we can see about 80% of adults in US are using the internet, but if we break those down, African Americans and Latinos are still are bit behind... “Mobile Access 2010.” Pew Internet & American Life Project, July 2010. Social Media Tools in Trainings Activities

Before... As you noted, some of you organizations are currently using social media, and some of your providers are using it as well! So for your activities and task, how can you use social media BEFORE

For WAD 2009, AIDS.gov asked their twitter followers to share their thoughts and suggestions for the activities for the day. You could ask people what THEY are planning for a training, get suggestions etc.

During... During a training, THIS for example is a social media event!

AIDS.gov uses social media for their activities routinely – blog and video to combine awareness for Caribbean American Awareness Day AND a How to use and share video. Webinar for NHTD 2010. Used facebook to promote blog and texting campaign. NHTD Locator widget – find testing sites, housing etc. Similarly, can use social media during training, for questions coming in, videos, etc.

After... To follow up after a training event has taken place...

Can again, get feedback, create podcasts, videos, blogs posts, all about repurposing information and resources that you already have!

Repurpose, Repurpose! Blog Podcast Tweet YouTube Channel 21

Benefits And Limitations Now we know a lot of the benefits of social media, but there are some limitations..

Benefits and Limitations Share information and resources Collaborate with partners Engage and gain feedback with target audience Still those not using social media Accessibility to tools Time and relationship building

Developing a Social Media Strategy Opportunity for you providers to use social media to reach their audiences

Approach to Social Media Strategy* People Objectives Strategy Technology POST Strategy is similar to other public health planning methods – like logics models etc., now we just have more tools and technology to adapt them to! * ©2007 Forrester Research, Inc. All rights reserved.

Who are you trying to reach? PEOPLE: Who are you trying to reach? Who is your target audience – providers?

Check out Communication Strategy handout

OBJECTIVES: What do you want to accomplish? (Decide on your objective before you decide on technology. Then figure out how to measure it.)

STRATEGY: How will your objectives be met? (Consider your overall communications plan, organizational culture, and capacity)

TECHNOLOGY: What’s an appropriate technology? (A wiki. A blog. A widget. Once you’ve defined your audience, objectives, and strategy, you can decide.)
