WHAT IS RESEARCH? A scientific process of inquiry and/or experimentation that involves a purposeful, systematic, and rigorous collection of data. Analysis and interpretation of the data are made to gain new knowledge or add to existing knowledge.

5 Stages of Research Identification of the problem Write a proposal Conduct a pilot study Conduct the main Study Write the paper

Research Problem The insight and imagination usually determines the ultimate value of the research study. Identifies a lack or gap in information.

Theory Based Theory Explanation of observed events Construct Describes a structure that is hypothesized Variable When a construct is though of as a characteristic that can vary in quality or quanity

Variables Independent Dependent

Introduction Introduction/Background Statement of the problem Explains how the study is grounded in the literature Suggests potential contributions Lists the hypothesis questions or objectives Sell it to the reader

Hypothesis Null There is no relationship between the variables. There will be no significant differences between children who attend preschool and those who do not. Directional There is a positive relationship between the number of older siblings and the social maturity scores of six year old children.

Statement of the Problem Prior to this study there was a lack of information related to the…

Purpose Statement The purpose of this study was it investigate differences…

Research Questions Write the research questions which will describe what you will study about your title

Class-work Update your work plan weekly Document the URL and title of each article you read Summarize one article daily and submit on Thursday Plan a weekly meeting with me Develop a power point and 5-8 page paper on your topic. Need minimum of 10 references (5 refereed). (Next 6 wks) APA format
