I will identify elements on the periodic table Happy Monday August 20, 2018 1. Today’s Date What is the periodic table? What is an element? 3. Journal #9 Color and label the periodic table 4. Homework I will identify elements on the periodic table 2. Objective

Building Blocks of Matter The fundamental building blocks of matter are atoms and molecules. These particles make up elements and compounds.

Atoms and Elements An atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler, stable substances and is made of one type of atom.

The Periodic Table Elements are arranged vertically into groups that share common chemical properties.

The Periodic Table Elements are also organized horizontally into rows, or periods.

Alkali Metals The elements on the left side of the table (Groups 1 and 2) are reactive metals The elements of group 1 are known as the alkali metals.

Alkaline-earth Metals The elements of Group 2 are called alkaline-earth metals. Alkaline-earth metals are also too reactive to be found in nature as pure elements.

Transition Elements Transition elements are metals They are good conductors of electricity Unreactive Ex: Gold

Halogens. Halogens are the most reactive nonmetals.

Noble Gases Unreactive

Metalloids Metalloids: B, Si, Ge, Ar, Sb, Te Properties between metals and nonmetals

Your Assignment Color and Label the periodic table: Alkali Metals (pink/red) Alkaline Earth Metals (orange) Transition Elements (yellow) Metalloids (green) Halogens (blue) Noble Gases (purple)
