Lesson Objectives To identify and explain what the Cult of Asclepios was To evaluate the importance of Supernatural ideas in Greek Medicine To analyse whether there has been a significant change in ideas about disease and infection since the ancient Egyptian time period.

Both of these ideas flourished at the same time Split Viewpoints ! Supernatural – Cult of Asclepios Rational/Scientific – Hippocrates Both of these ideas flourished at the same time Use the last paragraph on page 21 to summarise this information.

The Cult of Asclepios Greek God of Healing Built Temples – Asclepions Sick people visited temples – while there they performed several rituals 1) Make an offering or sacrifice to the God 2) Bathe in the sea to cleanse themselves 3) Sleep for at least 1 night in the abaton – a building with open air on each side 4) Whilst in the abaton, patients expected to be visited by a God
