Puritan Beliefs Everyone is born sinful God only saves certain people that he chooses Jesus died to save those chosen people, not everyone Salvation can’t be earned or lost through good deeds, it’s just given to certain people The Bible is the true law Simplicity is important in clothing and lifestyle

Puritan Beliefs Simple way of life

Predestination God chooses who will be saved before they are born. People that aren’t chosen can’t be saved and will go to hell.

Predestination Doing good deeds and living a holey lifestyle won’t change your chances of being saved, but since they didn’t know who was chosen to be saved, they all lived saintly lives Other religions found this unbelievable

Puritan View of other Faiths Even though they came to the New World to escape religious persecution and to gain religious freedom, they punished any people who did not join the Puritan faith with fines, banishment, and beatings.

Puritan View of other Faiths The Puritans religious rules were stricter and more severe than the ones that they had before in England.

Coming to the New World They thought the Church of England was too tolerant They wanted to set up a stricter religious community by going back to the roots of the Bible to carry out God’s will as His Chosen People.

Coming to the New World They originally immigrated to Sweden, but feared losing their individuality of religion because of being influenced by other religions The New World was not colonized so they wouldn’t have to worry about other influences effecting their beliefs

Forces Against Puritanism in 1600’s Changing economy meant they had to start industrializing which meant leading less simple lives. International rulers such as the King of England threatened their small strict communities Common people resented the few leaders that had power and began to rebel

Forces Agianst Puritanism in 1600's Theocracy was too strict and people found ways around the harsh rules that were forced upon them Rationality made people rely on the Bible less literally for their connection with God One leader had control over many people

Forces Against Puritanism in 1600's Industrialization King of England

Theocracy The belief that the Church and the Government should be run together with the same laws. This idea set up the earliest Government when the Puritans first came to Massachusetts

Theocracy They wanted to rid the Church of the hierarchy of bishops and cardinals.

Theocracies effect on Salem Residents View of Witchcraft Since the Church and the government are run by the same leaders, when the witches went against their religious views, the leaders hunted down the accused as law breakers.

Theocracies effect on Salem Resident's View of Witchcraft Some trials held for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts
