How did you get on with the homework? Argument Mapping How did you get on with the homework? Remember- argument maps are ‘diagrams which show the structure of an argument’ Starter: Take turns to draw the maps from the homework on the board to check we were correct

Draw the maps for the following: C The Arctic Monkeys are from Sheffield. Therefore, they are from the north.

What type of map is this called? Why? Big Brother is fun to watch. Big Brother gives ordinary people the opportunity to be on TV. Therefore, it should be on television more often. R R C

What type of map is this called? Why? This is the correct map for joint reasons. The T shape is important as it shows the reasons work Together! What type of map is this called? Why? All high school pupils like eating chips. Dave is a high school pupil. So Dave must like eating chips R1 R2 C

Two more practice examples before we move on! Using Argument Mapping, you can SHOW how arguments are put together. This is an important skill for the exam R C R1 + R2 C R1 R2 C Two more practice examples before we move on!

But what do you think is going on with this 4 part argument?? Reason 1 Dennis punched Bob. Dennis deserves to be severely punished. A beating with a cane is a severe punishment. So Dennis deserves to be caned. Intermediate Conclusion Reason 2 Final Conclusion

How do you think this argument maps out? Dennis punched Bob. Dennis deserves to be severely punished. A beating with a cane is a severe punishment. So Dennis deserves to be caned. R1 IC + R2 C

Example 2- label each part of the argument, (R1), (IC), (R2) or (C) Jill is in love with Jack. So she will go to the dance with Jack. Whoever goes to the dance with Jack will go in a Porsche. So Jill will go to the dance in a Porsche. R1 IC1 + R2 C

But what about this example: (R1) Transporting food across large distances increases the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. (IC) So this is likely to result in climate change and massive human suffering. (R2) Moreover people can live very well without exotic food from distant lands. (C) So we should be content with foods grown locally.

Because the intermediate conclusion doesn’t have to work together with reason two for it to be a logical final conclusion. Mapped like this- why? R1 IC R2 C

Homework- complete the worksheet
