Bowling Scoring

Scoring Terms Strike: Knocking down all 10 pins with the first ball Spare: Knocking down all 10 pins using 2 balls Open: Failing to knock down all 10 pins using 2 balls

Scoring Symbols Strike Spare 8 6 3 Open 9

Other Scoring Terms Gutter Ball: To roll the ball into the channel resulting in zero pins being knocked down Split: To roll the ball in such a way as to leave pins standing with space for other pins between them Miss: Failure to knock down any pins with the ball Foul: Touching the line or going beyond the line in any way when delivering the ball

Scoring Symbols Gutter ball 4 G Split 7 2 9 9 F Miss Foul 9 9

Bowling Math Open = merely add the total pins knocked down. Spare = 10 plus a bonus consisting of the number of pins knocked down on the next ball. 7 1 5 2 8 1 8 15 24 8 1 7 5 8 1 24 39 57 66 =24 + 10 + 5 =39 + 10 + 8

Bowling Math Strike = 10 plus a bonus consisting of the number of pins knocked down on the next two balls. 8 1 8 8 1 5 8 1 66 85 94 114 132 141 = 66 + 10 + 8 + 1 = 94 + 10 + 5 + 5 8 1 7 8 1 66 96 123 143 161 170 = 66 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 96 +10 + 10 +7 = 123 + 10 + 7 + 3

10 Frame Math 8 1 7 2 If an open occurs the bowler is finished. Merely add the total pins knocked down. If a spare occurs the bowler is entitled to roll one more ball. Add 10 plus the bonus of the pins on the next ball. If a strike occurs the bowler is entitled to roll two more balls. Add 10 plus the bonus of the pins on the next two balls. 141 150 1 more ball 8 1 7 6 141 157 = 141 + 10 + 6 2 more balls 8 1 6 3 141 160 = 141 + 10 + 6 + 3

Calculating Handicap Handicapping is a means of placing bowlers and teams with varying degrees of skill on as equitable a basis as possible for their competition against each other.

Calculating Handicap Here's How: Determine your average. In some league bowling, a minimum of three games is required to establish an average. To calculate your average, take the total number of pins and divide by the number of games. If you scored a total of 480 through three games, your average is 160 (480 divided by three). Determine the basis score. Ask your league secretary, as the basis score varies from one league to the next. Ideally, the basis score will be higher than the highest average in the league. A typical basis score might be 210. Many leagues will take a percentage, for example 90%. If you ask your league secretary what the basis score is, you might hear, “90% of 210.” Subtract your average from the basis score. If your average is 160 and your basis score is 210, subtract 160 from 210. 210 – 160 = 50. If 100% is your league, your handicap is 50.
