Spreading Germs! BTEC Applied Science Level 2 Unit 7: Health Applications of Science Assignment 2: Immunity and Health Screening

Lesson Objectives: To know where harmless bacteria can be found. To produce a swab plate. Complete your ‘Immune System’ Poster

Starter Activity: Look around the room, write down the place you think you would find the most bacteria?

What do you think? Keyboard? Door Handle? Rubbish Bin? Why? Do you think these bacteria would be mostly harmful or mostly harmless?

Starter Activity 2 Now think about the college as a whole? Where do you think you would find the most bacteria? Would this be harmful or harmless bacteria? Why?

The Spread of Bacteria There are bacteria on every surface you can think of. Around 99.9% of this bacteria is completely harmless. In fact some of it may be helpful. Can you think of how we use bacteria to help us?

Pathogens Some bacteria can cause disease. These are called pathogens. You find more of these bacteria in certain areas such as: Around Toilets In rubbish bins On the floor Around raw meat

Today’s Experiment You are going to set up an agar plate to investigate bacteria on surfaces and/or hands The agar plate will be incubated and you will check the results on Monday.
