AMERICAN HOMEFRONT DURING WWII pg. 18 “Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country.” List 5-7 things you would be willing to do to support your country in a time of need? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

1. Volunteerism During World War II about 16,000,000 personnel served in the U.S. Military. Approximately 11,200,000 in Army 4,200,000 in Navy 660,000 in Marines Americans were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

2. WAR BONDS Citizens would purchase bonds from the Government in order to raise revenue to support the war effort. Bonds raised $185 billion dollars for the US Treasury during WWII, showing Americans were willing to contribute to the cause.

3. Victory Gardens Vegetable gardens planted by millions of Americans to supplement household needs to better ensure an adequate supply for soldiers. America’s were willing do without so the troops had what they needed.

4. RATIONING To control raw materials Americans were asked to conserve or ration. It regulated the amount of goods you could obtain. Government issued ration books with coupons to use when purchasing rationed items. EXAMPLES of Rationed items: (pick three to write down) GAS/Fuels TIRES Rubber footwear/Shoes Meats/Cheese Sugar/Coffee Nylons
