Concept maps

What is a Concept Map? A hierarchical diagram used to represent a set of concepts beginning with the most general or most important and then working down to more specific detail.

What is a Concept Map? (cont’d) Key concepts are connected by links that have descriptive words on them explaining the relationship between the concepts.

What is a Concept Map? (cont’d) Each subordinate concept is more specific and less general than the concept drawn from it Most important concepts are found at the top; less important ones are at the bottom Meaning relationships between concepts are indicated by a connecting line and linking word(s) or propositions

What is a Concept Map? (cont’d)

Concept Map Example

Why use Concept Maps? Some things are easier to explain visually; not all information is linear Helps global learners see the “big picture” Shows relationships between ideas/items/concepts Quickly represents information – easy to refer to Good way to have students draw out relationships

Declarative vs Procedural Knowledge Declarative knowledge is factual or conceptual knowledge that a person has Procedural knowledge refers to how a person does something >>WHICH type of knowledge do you think works best in applying concept maps?
