Ice Storm of the Century! 1998 Logan MacLennan

When was it? In 1998 Canada had reasonably warm weathers and a mild winter. One exception being the first week of January where a fierce ice storm struck and created havoc for many people.

Where was it? The crazed ice storm took place between Georgian bay and the bay of Fundy.

The Effects on lives The storm shut down cities and towns all across Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and even in the U.S.A. There were mass power outages and transportation was basically not an option. A total of 47 lives were taken.

Costs and damages There was a total of 1.5 billion dollars of damage that were reported through insurance claims. Then there were also many more things damaged, like power lines down, trees down in roads, and ice cogged up drains, not allowing the slowly melting ice to leave the streets.

Total Cost The total amount the storm ended up costing the government was pushing 3 Billion dollars.

Interesting Facts 1,000 transmission towers went down 700,000 insurance claims were reported 300,000 telephone poles were taken out

More Interesting Facts Up to 100mm of freezing rain and ice pellets came down in some places The ice storm lasted a total of 80 hours The amount received was twice the amount that we regularly would get in a full year
