Calculating Slope

Slope Slope of a line is the measure of how up or down a line is pointing Slope = (y2-y1) (x2-x1) = rise run Y axis (x2,y2) Rise (X1, y1) Run X Axis

Points represented by (x,y) We choose (4,3) and (2,1) To calculate slope, choose any 2 points on the line of best fit and subtract Points represented by (x,y) We choose (4,3) and (2,1) y 5 4 (4,3) 3 2 1 (2,1) x 1 2 3 4 5

Slope = (y2-y1) (x2-x1) = (3-1) (4 -2) = 2 2 = 1 Therefore the slope of the line is 1.

Calculating Slope by Mass/Volume Graph Several samples of an object can be used to get a good measure of density. Given a chart: Choose your increments for each axis and plot your points. Draw a line of best fit Volume (x axis) Mass (y axis) 3mL 1g 12mL 4g 15mL 5g 21mL 7g

Density graph has a line of best fit through the origin (zero). Calculate the slope – choose any 2 points on the line We choose ( ) & ( ) Slope = ( - ) = ( - ) = Slope of mass-volume graph = DENSITY! Therefore density of object = g/mL Mass(g) Volume (mL)
