Education/Training (Texas) State/Local: Hazlewood Act On-The-Job Training State Grants The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees. While you are in training for a new job, you can receive monthly benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in addition to your regular salary. This means that you can receive up to $1,842 a month (Post-9/11 recipients training in the Dallas area) tax-free, on top of your regular salary, for the first six months of training. You can receive up to $1,473.60 per month for the second six months, $1105.20 for the third six months, $736.80 for the fourth six months, and $368.40 for the remaining months. That’s over $44,000 in cash benefits over two years, for training in an OJT or apprenticeship training program.
