(Compound-complex sentence) Writing Paragraphs You should already know this, but we are reviewing it anyway, since it will be on the OGT. (Compound-complex sentence)

Topic Sentence A single controlling idea Supports an essay’s thesis statement. Unifies the content of a paragraph (directs the order of the sentences). Advises the reader of the subject to be discussed and how the paragraph will discuss it.

Supporting Details More than restatements of the topic sentence Related to the topic Specific, not general, statements

Paragraph Order Chronological – the order in which we say events take place in the real world. Spatial – your position and your direction. Top to bottom Left to right Clockwise Near to far Front to back Inside to outside East to west, north to south

Paragraph Order Order of importance Decreasing – if you want to capture your reader’s attention immediately. Increasing – present ideas of lesser importance and save the most important idea for last. Comparison and contrast – writing that describes similarities and differences. Gives a more precise definition and clearer boundaries.

Concluding Sentence Emphasize important point Because I prepared for this test, I know I will ace it. Summarize supporting details The three reasons Thanksgiving is the best holiday are food, family, and no school. Call for response from reader Write to your principal a proposal to change the dress code. Link to next paragraph Although basketball is a highly-paid profession, baseball players make much more money per season.
