Module IV: Smoking and the Media Wyandotte County, KS Statistics

Do you think smoking is wrong? Why?

Module IV: Smoking and the Media - Data Wyandotte County students who think it is “all wrong” for someone their age to use this substance In your opinion, what affect can your “perception of wrongness” of using cigarettes have on your health? When a young person believes that drinking alcohol and using drugs is wrong, he or she is less likely to try it than those who do not think it is wrong, especially if those beliefs are reinforced during the early adolescent development years (Ames, Sussman, & Dent, 1999). Module IV: Smoking and the Media - Data Past 30-day use at least once among youth surveyed in Wyandotte County, KS What do you think is causing the trends shown in the “Past 30-Day Use” Graph? Alcohol use is evidence of the need for intervention. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA) measures “recent use” as any use within the past 30 days. Not all who have tried alcohol are in need of treatment, but early intervention is crucial for stopping the progression of risky behavior before it becomes the child’s new normal (Liddle, Rowe, Dakof, & Henderson, 2004).
