A sense of mystery – lots of questions left unanswered but some clues Long,sentences Active verbs Short, snappy sentences to create a sense of panic Powerful adjectives Alliteration and onomatopoeia Cliff hanger Ellipsis … and Exclamation marks Repetition Descriptive language: similes, metaphors, personification Words with negative associations
