Sentences have a subject & verb Informative paper Writing Rules: NO abbreviations, NO contractions (can’t , don’t, we’ll, should’ve, etc.) and spell out numbers less than 100. Capitalize names of people, places, awards, names of companies, books, movies, magazines, and newspapers. Begin a sentence with a CAPITAL letter and end the sentence with PUNCTUATION. Sentences have a subject & verb

Introductory paragraph Sentence #1: Introduce the topic you are writing about Sentence #2: Name the movie or book title you are writing about for UTOPIA Sentence #3: Name the movie or book title you are writing about for DYSTOPIA Sentence #4: Tell your reader why it’s important to know about utopia & dystopia topics Sentence #5: Thesis (a sentence that says what your reader will learn about utopia & dystopia)

Thesis Sentence examples Utopia may seem like a perfect world, but you will learn how dystopia makes ordinary people be heroes. Parts of a dystopian society are bad, but if you combine the best of utopia with dystopia you will learn how to survive in the best of both. Utopia and dystopia are opposites, but you will learn that they are not all bad nor all perfect. People today want to live in a perfect world, but utopia is not the answer, and you will learn that it could lead to a dystopia. You will learn that either utopia or dystopia in the world can cause good people to become bad. *Notice that EVERY sentence includes the word LEARN

Examples of topic sentences First, utopia is seen as a nearly perfect place. My first description of utopia is from the movie The Wizard of Oz. As an example, the utopia displayed in the city of Oz makes it seem like everyone who lives in Oz is happy. One fact about a dystopian society is that people are controlled by using harsh and cruel methods. *Use TRANSITION words in topic sentences

Transition Words For example Conclusion words In fact In conclusion Therefore Finally Since As you can see In the first place In summary Also Overall In addition to Finally Likewise Besides First For example However Meanwhile

Clincher Sentence The last sentence in ALL your body paragraphs. A “wrap-it-up” sentence. Examples Although utopia cannot be a real place today, people can make changes to help the world be a better place even if it is not perfect. The bravery and heroism displayed Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz show that when things look perfect, we still need a hero in the end. One of the best examples of a dystopia is from the book The Hunger Games, which shows us that age does not matter when you want to overcome evil.

Conclusion: Example Restate thesis In conclusion, we might want to live in a utopia if we could design its perfection, but we can also work to fix the problems in a dystopia. Think about what you have learned about utopia and dystopia to decide what is best for our world today. If you look at the characters who became heroes in a dystopian society, you will see how they were kind, helpful, and made a difference in their world. Someday you may face the obstacles of living in a world that is becoming a dystopia, but remember you can make a difference. Restate thesis

Rough Draft #1 Write on graphic organizer in pencil or blue/black ink pen (NO COLOR INK) Indent for every paragraph Introduction: 5 sentences with thesis sentence at the end (follow your graphic organizer) EVERY body paragraph begins with: transition word and topic sentence Facts are written in complete sentences CLINCHER sentence is a summary sentence that ends EVERY body paragraph Conclusion: 4 sentences
