Lyme Regis in literature ‘They were come too late in the year for any amusement or variety which Lyme, as a public place, might offer. The rooms were shut up, the lodgers almost all gone, scarcely any family but of the residents left; and, as there is nothing to admire in the buildings themselves, the remarkable situation of the town, the principal street almost hurrying into the water, the walk to the Cobb, skirting round the pleasant little bay, which, in the season, is animated with bathing machines and company; the Cobb itself, its old wonders and new improvements, with the very beautiful line of cliffs stretching out to the east of the town, are what the stranger’s eye will seek; and a very strange stranger it must be, who does not see charms in the immediate environs of Lyme, to make him wish to know it better.’ Persuasion, Jane Austen (1818) 1793 engraving of Jane Austen. How do coastal processes create challenges for Lyme Regis? coastal erosion has caused serious damage to property in the last 100 years the coastline is particularly vulnerable to landslides sections of coastline are being managed, but construction and maintenance are very expensive the sea wall has been breached in very stormy weather coastal management at Lyme Regis can cause problems further down the coast Source: Lyme Regis Community Plan 2007–2027. Available at: www.dorsetforyou.com/media/115620/Lyme-Regis-Parish-Plan/pdf/Lyme_Regis.pdf

Why is housing a problem for the residents of Lyme Regis? the physical geography of Lyme Regis restricts the land available for new homes: houses cannot be built on land close to the sea, which is vulnerable to erosion 15% of the houses in Lyme Regis are holiday homes or second homes this puts upward pressure on house prices, so local people cannot afford to buy them young people are particularly disadvantaged by high house prices and leave the town after finishing their secondary education. This results in an ageing population with very different needs Source: Lyme Regis Community Plan 2007–2027. Available at: www.dorsetforyou.com/media/115620/Lyme-Regis-Parish-Plan/pdf/Lyme_Regis.pdf

How does tourism create challenges for the residents of Lyme Regis? the local economy is heavily reliant on the short summer tourist season average wages are 17% below the national average tourists require services such as toilets, car parks, cafés and hotels, which the residents do not need because tourist amenities have replaced local services, local people must often travel to neighbouring towns for shops, hospitals and other services traffic congestion is a problem during the summer coastal protection work reduces the number of car parking spaces, and construction vehicles add to the congestion Source: Lyme Regis Community Plan 2007–2027.
